On September 18, 2017, the First “Oriental Land” Summit Forum on Elderly Education was held in Shanghai. This was one of the series of activities in “Lifelong Education Week” organized by the Ministry of Education. The forum was hosted by Shanghai University for the Elderly and presided over by Mr. Li Xuanhai (President of Shanghai University for the Elderly and President of Shanghai Academy of Elderly Education). The forum was attended by some 126 representatives from 17 elderly education institutions at provincial and municipal level.

Participating experts had an in-depth discussion at the forum and finally adopted an “Oriental Land Declaration”. The declaration states that, in order to improve the quality of life and the quality of remaining years of the elderly, we need to help these people to follow the trend of our times, share the new scientific and technological fruits, integrate into the society, and participate in the social development. “Innovation, Sharing, and Development” is the theme of this forum and the important guide for carrying out our National Plan for the Development of Elderly Education (2016--2020).

President Li Xuanhai pointed out that Shanghai Academy of Elderly Education should not only serve the municipality of Shanghai, but also provide service to the whole country. We should try to make this institution a national database and think-tank for research on elderly education.
