At 6:00 p.m., Beijing time, on September 9th, 2020, International Association of the Universities for the Third Age (AIUTA) held the 106th online Governing Board (GB) Meeting on Zoom. GB members from 21 countries and regions attended the meeting. Francois Villas, President of AIUTA, presided over the meeting. Ma Xianguo, First Vice President of AIUTA and Director of the International Research Center for Senior Education (IRCSE), China Association of the Universities for the Aged (CAUA), Wang Younong, Director of International Liaison Department, CAUA, Shen Hong, Executive Vice Director of IRCSE, et al also attended.

There are mainly three items on the agenda:

First, due to the pandemic, the international seminar scheduled in Oct. 2020 in Senegal will be postponed to the second half of next year. Prof. Vellas and Prof. Amoros (Spain) put forward some orientations for academic research after the pandemic, and they are “COVID-19, U3A and Health” “COVID-19, U3A, and Education” “COVID-19, U3A, and Culture” “COVID-19, U3A, and Tourism”. Hopefully the relevant seminar is expected to be held in Greece in March, 2021.

Second, Prof. Zerbini (Italy) introduced the project of “New Silk Road and Culture Archeology” brought up by Prof. Vellas and him. On the project, countries alongside the “Silk Road” are interconnected through culture and archeology. Ma Xianguo pointed out that China has a long history which can be an important part of the project. We’ve selected four cities alongside the “Silk Road” as the sites such as Luoyang (Henan Province), Xi’an (Shaanxi Province), Jiayuguan and Dunhuang (Gansu Province). China’s universities for the elderly will actively support the project, and we hope to enhance the international cooperation in elderly education.

Third, IRCSE will hold the online international seminar of “Digital Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Universities for the Elderly” at Qinzhou Academy on Oct. 16th, 2020. Ma Xianguo introduced the preparations for the seminar and invited the experts to attend. Their participation and contributions are welcome. Wang Younong also expressed welcome to the experts to attend the online seminar and have a profound and overall academic exchange with China’s U3As. He added that the Dictionary for Elderly Education was currently being proofread for the second time, and expected to be published this year.

GB members interacted actively and shared their opinions: The pandemic has somewhat influenced the teaching activities of elderly education worldwide. The universities for the elderly across the world should enhance cooperation and fight the plight with joint efforts. The pandemic will end eventually and senior tourism will recover definitely.

At last, Prof. Vellas made a summary. He stated that it was not easy to have all the GB members across the world to attend the online meeting, because the time of the meeting varied from country to country. It started at 4 a.m. (the earliest) in Colombia, and 8 p.m. (the latest) in Australia. This two-hour meeting was the most important international exchange in elderly education, and finally turned out to be a success. It showed that AIUTA had insightful thinking on the world elderly education and great spiritual strength to get all of us united.
